Access

From Zermatt, reach the Hörnli Hut (3260m) by cable car to Schwarzsee then 2h walk. Hörnligrat route (Hörnli ridge), normal Swiss route. Departure at 4am. Distance: 4 km round trip, elevation: 1220m, duration: 8-10h. Technical high-difficulty mountaineering (AD+/D).

Best season

Best period: July to mid-September. Optimal conditions late July-August. Very early departure imperative (3:30-4am) to avoid rockfall and benefit from good conditions. Mandatory reservation at Hörnli Hut. Mountaineering experience and acclimatization required. Guide strongly recommended.

Recommended equipment

Compact or light mirrorless camera, versatile 24-70mm lens, mini-tripod, polarizing filters, multiple batteries (intense cold), reinforced waterproof protection. Technical mountaineering equipment: light aluminum crampons, 2 ice axes, harness, via ferrata lanyard, helmet, 50m rope if roped, rigid mountaineering boots, extreme cold clothing, category 4 glacier glasses, SPF 50+ sunscreen.
