Sunrise at the lake: The first light of day illuminates the summits of Mont Blanc, Grandes Jorasses, and Aiguille Verte. Reflections in the calm water create spectacular symmetrical compositions. Arrive 30 minutes before sunrise to set up your tripod.
Panorama from Loriaz refuge: Elevated viewpoint offering a unique perspective on the lake and surrounding peaks. Ideal for long exposures at dusk.
Autumn larches: From late September to early October, golden larches contrast beautifully with snow-capped peaks and the deep blue of the lake.
Evening reflections: In late afternoon, when the wind drops, the water becomes a perfect mirror reflecting the Mont Blanc massif in golden light.
2.5h hike from the Index (Lognan then Index cable car). Well-marked trail but requires good fitness
Sunrise (5-7am in summer) or late afternoon (5-7pm) for reflections on calm water
Tripod essential for long exposures, polarizing filter recommended, wide-angle lens 16-35mm
Check weather before departure, inform someone of your route. Terrain slippery when wet
Warm clothes even in summer, water (2L minimum), energy snacks, headlamp for early starts
Lac de Cheserys is one of the most exceptional photo spots in the Mont Blanc massif. Between the physical effort and the visual reward, this hike offers breathtaking panoramas that more than justify the climb. A must for any mountain photographer.
